Burunge Wildlife Management Area, Tanzania

Putting land management in the hands of local communities helps the wildlife within. In a decentralized effort to wildlife management, communities set aside land for wildlife conservation in return for a share of tourism revenues from these areas. A study demonstrates the positive ecological impacts of this approach, which results in higher wildlife densities, lower livestock densities and higher giraffe survival and population growth. The benefits are shared between nine villages to execute social and economic development activities.
